It has been a few days so the information is sinking in, the reality becoming well more real now… that we are off to Mexico!!! Starting this October we will be relocating for the winter (to start) to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! For now the plan is to start out slow and dedicate 6 months and see where it leads us. It means a nicer place for the Grandparents to visit and more to do with them when they visit now right???
This isn’t something we decided overnight this is 12 years in the talks. We knew before we had kids that we wanted to make a big move like this and that the kids would naturally settle into this lifestyle of ours. Well now with our girls ages 6 and 10 we have decided its now not later. They are growing up faster than we ever thought time is really not slowing down and we want to have a quality life with them and travel a lot more with them. We have always been a fly by the edge of your seat family constantly making last minute decisions to head off out of the country for a week with a weeks’ notice to do so. We figured let’s give this a shot and see what happens! With my career allowing me to still have lots of time with our girls it works well. I plan to also offer editing services this fall too (just working on details of that) as well as there is the planning of workshops while I am there that will be announced later on!
I have been asked so many questions the last few days and so I thought I would put it all out there for anyone who is as curious as I am. Here are the top 6 questions answered:
What made you decide Mexico?
We have been throughout all of Mexico at least 25 times in the last 12 years and for us it always felt like home. It is where family is really a top priority and they treat us with respect, they treat women with respect so for us that was important. There are currently a lot of expat families living in Mexico so that will also be nice for the kids to meet other traveling friends too! You can never have too many friends from all over the world!
How long will you be gone?
I have weddings booked in 2018 in Canada so we will be back come the spring time. I plan to come back to Canada and be situated in the Okanagan as well as travel frequently back to Alberta.
What do the kids think?
They are both excited and nervous to leave their friends. They have built up strong friendships here and it will be sad for them to part for a while but with technology these days they can always keep in touch on skype and we will make sure they get to visit their friends. They both love the Mexican culture, the language and everything there so we are making sure they take part and get to pick out adventures to go do. Maddie is totally into Day of The Dead so we will surely be there in time for that which she is so excited for. We have spent a lot of time in that area and took the girls snorkeling with whale sharks a few years ago and they both are most excited for that time of year when they return next May to see them again!
Will you home school or send them to school there?
For now the plan is to start with home school but there are a lot of great schools in that area that I feel we may put them in if the home school doesn’t work out but with 2 smart girls on our hands I don’t see the problem. We will be sure to put them in Spanish lessons as soon as we get there (we are working on a bit right now too). I like the idea of home school so we can just venture off on day trips and explore more.
Will you be selling everything?
Right now no. We plan to make this trip and see where we are at towards the end of the trip and go from there. I’d like to have something to come home to just in case.
Will you be renting or buying a home in Mexico?
We will be renting. We don’t know where we will end up so it seems easiest to rent and see where we fall in love with a place. Who knows once we are there we may decide we like the small inland towns… it’s all a part of the adventure!
I’m a list girl so my list just keeps getting longer and longer of things to do before we go and it will be a lot of work this isn’t like a vacation pack and go it requires a lot of planning! I will blog as we plan and get ready and definitely will be blogging about home schooling and our adventures along the way.
Thank you so much for all of your support it means the world to us. I cannot wait to share more!
